The Power of Listening: The Golden Opportunity of One Unexpected Conversation
Over the weekend, I headed to a local superstore on a routine shopping mission. Nothing too out of the ordinary—other than the kitchen over-the-range microwave oven going kaputt the night before, resulting in some substantial additions to my Saturday errands and chores list, namely the procurement and installation of a major home appliance. But what happened in that parking lot reminded me of a powerful truth: sometimes the greatest blessing we can offer is simply our presence.
An Unexpected Encounter in the Parking Lot
As I pulled into a parking space, a car immediately pulled into the space right beside me. Behind the wheel was a gentleman in his mid-70s. He rolled down his window, waving to get my attention. I lowered my window as well to see what he wanted. He said he was curious about my truck. He hadn't seen many like it and hoped to have a look and ask me some questions about it.
In that moment, I had a choice. I could rush through the conversation, brush him off, and move on with my busy day—or I could pause, step out of my routine, and give him my full attention.
I chose to listen.
From Trucks to Life Stories
I got out, showed him my truck and demonstrated its most unique and appealing features. What started as a quick question about my truck turned into a heartfelt, hour-plus conversation.
He shared that he used to own a truck himself but sold it four years ago. At the time, his wife’s health was failing, and it had become too difficult for her to climb up into and down out of his truck, so he traded it in for a car that would be easier for her.
More recently, his wife had passed away. After 43 beautiful years of marriage, he was now alone.
As we talked, I learned he had retired from a 40+ year career in the aerospace industry and was a lifelong hot rod enthusiast. His eyes lit up when he shared stories about cars, engines, and how he met his wife, a sweet, beautiful single mother of two, whom he married after three months of courtship. I mostly just listened—and he clearly enjoyed having someone to talk to.
The Hidden Struggles Around Us
That encounter was a powerful reminder: we rarely know what people are carrying in their hearts and what may be on their minds. On the surface, it might look like a simple chat about a vehicle. But underneath, there are stories of life, love, loss, challenge, triumph, joy, and pain waiting to be heard.
By pausing and giving someone our full attention, we give them more than just our time—we give them dignity, connection, and a sense that they matter.
Presence: The Greatest Gift We Can Offer
We live in a world of perpetual distractions—phones constantly streaming news and entertainment, hectic schedules, and a culture that often values transactional speed over experiential depth. But when we slow down and give someone our undivided attention, incredible things happen in the renewal of presence, connection and humanity.
That day, an hour after pulling into the superstore parking lot, I had not yet made any purchase, yet I had received a priceless gift: a reminder that kindness, patience, and presence truly matter.
Your attention and presence can be the greatest blessing you offer someone today. And more often than not, in giving that blessing, you’ll find yourself blessed in return.
Takeaway: The next time someone waves you down, strikes up a conversation, or simply needs to be heard—pause, listen, be present. It just might be the most important thing you do and the greatest blessing you share all day.
